We received a question from a member regarding hiring a web designer. She is about to contact different web developers, ask for quotes, and compare their offers.
So her question is: what requirements should I ask the developers to include in their quotes?

This depends of course on what you want the website to do and your brand’s business model. If you, for example, are selling B2B, and need attest levels (where a manager attests the purchase an employee has made) you need to ask for such a function specifically.
However, most brands have fairly similar needs, and here is a list you could ask for and be aware of when looking for web designers:

Some criteria that you must have:
Responsive site, meaning mobile-friendly. Should work on a computer, phone, and tablet.
    Fast loading time
Easy navigation If you don’t know how to build up your navigation, you can take a look at a big range of modern webshops and see how they have solved the navigation. If you then set up your navigation in a similar way, it is a big chance the user finds it intuitive, since it works like most other online stores 2019.
Easy checkout, as few clicks as possible while still avoiding accidental checkout.
    Easy to work with SEO
    Email sign-up
    Blog section
    Secure payment
    SSL certificate (=secure site)

    You also want it to:
    Show frequent customers what’s new
    Show recommended products
    Handle different shipping alternatives
    Show detailed description
    Show detailed photos
    Show product videos
    Show top sellers
    Show sizing charts
GDPR agreement functionality, where the user agrees to cookies
Links to social media & Youtube

You should also ask or negotiate so that they handle the technical support and updates of the site once it is up and running.

A heads up: IT projects are very often running late. However, they will probably give you a delivery date. You could include in your contract a clause, saying, for example, if they are 1 week late, you get 5 or 10 % off the price. If they are 2 weeks late 10-20 % off, and so on. That will increase your chances of getting your website ready in time:)

    Hi Klas,

Great information. Could you recommend any good website designer/ developer ? or any website where I can search for them?

    Thanks,

    Rutu

    Hi Rutu,

I would recommend you take a look at upwork.com. We have used that site for both developers and other services. You can use parts of the list above to post an offer. Then developers will pitch themselves, and then it easy for you to check their ratings and reviews to see if they are legit. If they are serious about their freelance work they will probably do everything to maintain their high ratings on the upwork platform. There is also a built-in escrow system, meaning you don’t have to pay in full until the work is done.
